Once a high school gym, this quirky Indiana home asks $585K for sale

A former gym that’s now a house is courting buyers to take possession of its deed.

In Indiana’s tiny 450-person town of Wilkinson, a local school’s converted sports center has nixed its basketball hoop for a courtside kitchen — and achieved internet stardom. And now it can all be yours.

“This historic gym transformed into a modern residence offers a rare blend of historical charm and contemporary comforts,” says the listing, which hit the market in December with a $599,977 price tag, an ask that this month was reduced by $15,000, to $584,977. “Featuring meticulous upgrades, a serene location, and a rich community history, this home is an exceptional find for those seeking a unique living experience.”

Built in 1950 as a recreational facility for Wilkinson High School, the compound is today listed as a four-bedroom, three-bathroom, single-family detached house.

It has a brick facade, a second-story porch, expansive rooms throughout and is set on 3.6 acres.

The current owners, husband and wife Lauren and Kyle Petry, bought the property in 2022 and have extensively renovated the 5,300-plus-square-foot residence. Today it features such modern comforts as central air, refinished flooring, a refurbished bathroom and an updated kitchen on what was, still visibly, once a basketball court, the Indianapolis Star reported

When they purchased the unique abode two years ago, the Petrys paid $300,000, $1,000 over the listing price, and managed to get their offer in shortly before the listing went viral and attracted offers of more than double theirs, the New York Times previously reported.

At the time, the couple — both of whom grew up in the area — told the outlet they wanted to refurbish the court and make it accessible to the community, perhaps by hosting pickup games.
