My 97-square-foot Paris apartment makes NYC feel huge

Real Estate

Say “oui!” to this wee apartment.

A TikTok user, whose real name is unknown — but is a young woman who appears to be an American au pair in Paris — has gone viral on the app for showing off her modest French accommodations during her time abroad.

Just how modest? The size of her Parisian spread equates to a tight 96.8 square feet, according to Insider, which requires her to store her suitcase in her shower.

“[It’s] small but i LOVE it,” she captions the video, which she posted in April, that has since racked up 3.1 million views. The clip is a tour of the unit, whose tiny size is even miniscule for New York City standards. However, her biggest perk is a distant, and seasonal, view of the Eiffel Tower through an oversize window.

But the unit is anything but oversize — and, naturally, TikTok users chimed in to offer their thoughts.

“Harry Potter had more space under the stairs,” wrote one, while another said, “This apartment should be $20 a month.”

The unit opens to a small sink, which seems to double as a kitchen and bathroom sink.

The uploader clarified the cost, some 600 to 700 euros per month, about $611 to $713 in today’s figures, paid for by the host family who employs her.

Maybe it’s the fact it comes for free for her as to why she likes it, but she noticeably takes good care of it — not only keeping it tidy but also decorating it with postcards from the museums she’s visited.

Her tiny home opens to a small sink in the foyer, which is where she keeps her toiletries. A tiny pivot to her left takes her to the main living area, which has a small kitchen next to a tiny bed. The kitchen is essentially a small corner nook with a hot plate, a mini fridge — plus a couple of drawers and cabinets for some storage.

Between the kitchen and the bed is a narrow closet, which she says “is a mess,” but the video shows her clothing organized across a rack and some shelves. On the other side of the bed, thanks to good organization, is a fixture you wouldn’t imagine fitting inside.

“This is my little desk area with my cute park view,” she says of a glass-top desk that looks outside to a leafy view and, yes, the Eiffel Tower when cold weather strips the trees of their greenery.

But a tiny turn to the right gives real meaning to the term water closet.

“Behind door number 1, we have my toilet,” she says while opening a frosted glass door that very snugly fits that toilet right behind. A similar pair of frosted glass doors right next to it hides the very small shower stall, big enough to fit her purple suitcase.

“So … cute!” she says.

And someone else in Paris, who seems to understand the tight crunch, agreed.

“girl I live in Paris and this space is seriously so well thought out & decorated!!!” wrote another commenter. “probs the best [96.8 square feet] i’ve seen.”
