‘Peanuts’ creator Charles Schulz’s CA home, golf course list for $3.9M

Real Estate

The listing is in, but it’s charging much more than Lucy.

In the Sonoma County city of Sebastopol, the midcentury modern manse that once served as the late “Peanuts” cartoonist Charles M. Schulz’s art studio has hit the market.

The property up for sale is just a portion of the 27 acres once owned by the enormously influential comic-strip creator, ied in 2000 at age 77 and referred to the sprawling compound as the “Coffee Grounds.”

The Schulz family parted with the bucolic retreat in late 1971, donating the entirety of the address to a local church, which subsequently sold it to a Christian home for youths called the Agape Force Ministry in 1974.

The Agape Force then broke up the land into three parcels before selling two of them — the one containing Schulz’s art studio and a second parcel with a four-hole, par-three golf course and nature trails — to a family with the surname Rogers in 1976, according to press materials.

Three generations of the family have owned it since, using it for gatherings, weddings, reunions and a vacation rental.

Those two parcels, together amounting to 8.86 acres, are now available for $3.95 million.

Constructed in 1966 by the same firm that built part of what has become Santa Rosa’s Charles M. Schulz Museum, the estate contains a total of 1,484 square feet of living space, a two-car garage and extensive landscaping.

There’s only one bedroom and two bathrooms but an enormous amount of outdoor deck — approximately 1,340 square feet — as well as a 380-square-foot stone patio, fishpond, wood-carved benches and sculptures, plus lush Redwood groves alive with deer, quail and local peacocks throughout the idyllic grounds.

Other interior highlights are a stone fireplace and “meticulously preserved original design” including a flat lava stone exterior wall, as well as modern updates, such as a stove, custom cabinetry, kitchen skylights, insulated glass doors and windows and the remodeling of Schulz’s old studio into a bedroom.

Mark Stevens and Gail Gijzen, affiliated agents with the Sebastopol office of Coldwell Banker Realty in Northern California, share the co-listing with the Coldwell Banker Global Luxury program.
