Historic Shelter Island mansion sells for record-breaking $12.9M

At the eastern end of Long Island, a new record has been set.

In the Suffolk County vacation town of Shelter Island, the sale of a sprawling beach house has brought the area’s highest-ever price for a single-family home to a new high. 

Originally built in 1952, the property at 2 Charlie’s Lane closed this week for $12.95 million, $1 million below its $13.95 million ask, according to a release sent by the listing brokerage. 

The property — which was listed by Nick Brown of Sotheby’s International Realty — was originally designed by the architect Bertrand Goldberg for John Snyder, then-CEO of a now-defunct railroad car-building company.

Thus, it is named the Snyder House. 

The home “was recognized as a mid-century marvel, both in design and waterfront location,” and onlookers would travel from far and wide, “many transported by amphibious airplanes from New York City to experience the so-called ‘demonstration house’” and “must see” abode, according to press materials.

Then, in 2002, 50 years after its construction, the now-former owners rebuilt the lodgings upon its original footprint, being careful to maintain “elements of its mid-century modernist design while sparing no expense to bring this 20th-century masterpiece up to 21st-century living standards,” the listing explained. 

Following the extensive reconstruction project, the domicile measures in at approximately 6,000 square feet, spread over a single level set on 3.4 acres of land. 

There are six bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms, stone floors, glass walls — and, outside, amenities ranging from a 74-foot-long heated saltwater gunite pool and a private beach to a 235-foot deep water dock.

In addition to various historic elements, including its original eight-flue stone fireplace, it also still maintains the same panoramic views of West Neck Harbor and the Long Island Sound.

The Snyder House is not the only property to bring Shelter Island’s sales price point up in recent years: The area has experienced such an enormous real estate revolution as of late that it has undergone something of an identity crisis.
