Joan Didion’s Upper East Side apartment has officially been spoken for — and now, it’s poised to move onto its next chapter.
After the four-bedroom residence hit the market for $7.5 million in January 2023, about a year after the 87-year-old “Slouching Towards Bethlehem” author passed away in the unit in December 2021, the unit has sold for $5.4 million, The Post has learned.
The residence had received some price cuts for it to sell. Last May, it received a seven-digit reduction to $6.5 million, a figure subsequently reduced to $5.75 million. Early this year, in January, it entered contract.
No information was immediately available regarding the buyer.
Didion purchased the 11-room 30 E. 71st Street abode in 1988 with her late husband, John Gregory Dunne, who died of a heart attack in the apartment in December 2003 at the age of 71.
The unit was the couple’s primary residence.
During her more than three decades in the co-op, Didion was an active member of its board.
Located about a block from Central Park, the 3,600-plus-square-foot, prewar residence features a generous split-level living room featuring a library with robin’s egg blue bookshelves, matching moldings, a woodburning fireplace and herringbone floors.
There’s a wet bar, beamed ceilings, oversize windows and wide hallways throughout, as well as an eat-in kitchen with chef’s grade appliances (Didion long held a passion for cooking.)
The unit is accessed via a “semi-private elevator landing” and also has a staff room with an ensuite bath, a laundry room and a pantry, The Post previously reported.
The 96-year-old corner building also has a variety of shared amenities including a 24-hour doorman, hall attendants, a resident manager, a fitness center and bike storage.
Jennifer Stillman, Erik Ternon, Noble Black and Marion Magnuson, all of Douglas Elliman, held the listing.
